Walnut recall in the U.S. due to E. coli concerns

A company in California is recalling walnuts distributed to Whole Foods and other natural food stores across 19 states following an E. coli outbreak. Gibson Farms, based in Hollister, is recalling its Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts after identifying potential contamination with an E. coli strain known to cause severe diarrheal illness. The recall notice, issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), highlights the risk of kidney failure and serious health issues, particularly for young and elderly individuals.

The FDA has identified over 300 retail locations in states including Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, and others that may have received the contaminated walnuts. The outbreak has so far affected individuals in California and Washington.

Retailers have been advised to remove the recalled walnuts, which were sold in bulk bins with expiration dates between May 21, 2025, and June 7, 2025, from shelves. The FDA's ongoing investigation aims to ascertain if additional products or states are involved. Consumers are urged to dispose of or return the recalled walnuts and to cleanse any surfaces or items that might have been in contact with the product.
