"Garlic production in Spain has recorded a significant drop in terms of volume due to extremely unfavorable weather conditions, which has resulted in abnormal quality and smaller sizes. As a result, the campaign is going to be more challenging," says Borja Mira, of IMPERIO Garlic.
"With nearly 60 years of experience, we stand out as world leaders in garlic production, with a wide range of sizes, varieties and an outstanding quality. In the current campaign, our yield per hectare has been reduced by more than 50%; however, we have expanded our acreage by 15% compared to the previous campaign and have 850 active hectares," he says.
The company, which exports its products worldwide, is always seeking to establish new business relationships. "Currently, we export 90% of what we produce. However, it's very difficult to open new doors in campaigns as challenging as the current one in terms of quality and quantity," says Borja Mira.
Argentina, Peru, Chile and Egypt have gained weight in the global garlic market, making up for the volumes that China, the US and Spain have not been able to supply due to the shortcomings in their volumes and quality. According to Borja, "the current garlic stock in storage chambers in Spain has clearly fallen below normal levels, and this is having an impact on the price of grade 1 and 2 garlic."
"We are betting heavily on the automation of the garlic production process to tackle the excessive cultivation and handling costs, which, together with the weather adversities, could have a very negative impact on garlic production," says Borja Mira.
"We strive to supply a quality product to all our customers; that is always our key goal in each campaign. To achieve this, we research and develop new cultivation techniques, production processes, varieties, etc. We guarantee a year-round supply to our customers."
