China's Pagoda Industrial Group rolls out first batch of Spanish persimmons

China's Pagoda Industrial Group has launched the sale of its first batch of persimmons from Spain, following an easing of import regulations. The Spanish fresh produce supplier, The Natural Hand, has shipped the fruit to China, following the update of the Chinese customs list in the first half of the previous year, which sanctioned the import of Spanish persimmons into the mainland.

The inaugural batch of approximately 16 tons arrived in Shanghai on January 25 and has since been distributed to various locations. The Rojo Brillante variety of persimmons, which has enjoyed popularity in Asian markets such as Singapore and Malaysia, is expected to introduce new flavors to mainland consumers, according to a Pagoda executive.

Pagoda aims to penetrate the Chinese market with the final season batch harvested last year, as reported by Chinanews.Com, quoting Xu Zhen, the customs declaration manager at Shanghai-based Huizhan International Trade. Spain, contributing to one-third of global trade, is the leading exporter of persimmons with a staggering 210,000 tons of the fruit.
