South African pomegranate season kicking off this week

The pomegranate picking season in South Africa will start this week. Sapex growers will start picking Angel Red in the North of South Africa. Only limited volumes of this cultivar will be available, and it will be the first time it will be exported by Sapex. We are keen to see how Angel Red will handle the export conditions. Our first Wonderful will be harvested in week 5/6. The season is a couple of days later than last year, but shipping will probably start at the same time as last year. Shipping is a bit of a concern at the moment, and we hope the problems in the ports will be resolved soon.

The internal quality and colour of Angel Red is already very good.

The Wonderful still has a way to go before harvest.

With the new plantings in the early areas coming into production, Sapex expects an increase in pomegranate volumes of about 20%. The volumes of South Africa as a whole, will probably increase by about 10% compared to last year.

At the moment weather conditions are good, although some warm temperatures have been forecasted that might cause some sunburn. Market conditions are positive at the moment and we are looking forward to supply our clients with top grade pomegranates in the next few months.
