El Niño phenomenon has had notable impact on mango production in Peru and Ecuador

A significant rise in the cost of mangoes is expected to hit consumers, with prices projected to surge by 50% compared to last year. Consumers are already looking for budget-friendly alternatives and smarter shopping strategies.

The El Niño phenomenon has had a notable impact on mango production in Peru and Ecuador. The steep drop in production, particularly in the Áncash region, has resulted in significant economic losses for the sector. Compounding this is a 200% increase in cultivation input costs. Ecuador faces a potential decrease in production ranging from 60% to 75%.

On the other side of the world, China has suspended imports of Taiwan mangoes due to the presence of mealybug pests. Some interpret this move as an example of ‘fruit diplomacy’, given the escalating tensions between the two nations.
