Germany's purchases of Turkish peppers plummet

Data from the statistical service Euroestacom (Icex-Eurostat) analyzed by Hortoinfo reveal that Germany's imports of Turkish peppers have registered a sharp reduction over the last three campaigns.

There has been a 90.1% decline from the 2020/2021 to the 2022/2023 campaign, and as highlighted in the analysis, it is very likely that this fall has been a consequence of the high rate of alerts for excess pesticides detected in the peppers that Turkey ships to the European Union.

Spain remains the leading supplier of peppers in the German markets, with 207.81 million kilos in the 2022/23 season, which accounted for 60.69% of the country's total imports. The total value reached 530.04 million Euro, with an average price of 2.55 €/kg.

The Netherlands is Germany's second largest supplier of peppers, with 90.09 million kilos, which is 26.89% of the total, worth 242 million Euro and an average price of 2.63 € / kg.

The third largest supplier was Austria, which supplied a total of 10.33 million kilos (3.02%) worth 18.69 million Euro in the 2022/2023 campaign at an average price of 1.81 € / kg.

Morocco ranked fourth, with 8.1 million kilos (2.36%) worth 14.22 million Euro and an average price of 1.76 € / kg.

Turkey has only sold 575,800 kilos of peppers on the German market during the 2022/2023 season. These shipments were worth 1.01 million Euro, with an average price of 1.76 €/kg.

The total volume of bell peppers purchased by Germany in the last campaign amounted to 342.421 million kilos worth 855.27 million Euro, with an average price of 2.5 € / kg.

It should be noted that German importers have also reduced their purchases of bell peppers to the Netherlands by 29.5% and to Spain by 10.1%, while they have increased purchases to Morocco by 27.7%.
