Audee Rios with Coliman Bananas

“For our export business, we have transitioned from conventional to organic bananas”

Back in 1978, Coliman Bananas- Grupo AGGALL was established with the goal to ensure a reliable supply chain of produce from start to finish. This was achieved by creating a vertically integrated entity, overseeing production, marketing, and distribution. Today, the company is still under the ownership of the Aguilar family, with Jorge Aguilar Jr. now at the helm as the company’s CEO.

Refinement of product offering
“The company was founded with a vision to become a dependable supplier of bananas and other products for the Mexican market,” says Audee Rios with Coliman Bananas. While bananas have always been a primary focus, initially the company managed a wide variety of products in Mexico. Over the years, the product lineup has adapted to changing market dynamics. “This has resulted in a refinement of our product offering and we now concentrate on bananas, along with papayas, pineapples, apples, pears, and melons.”

While the company started out selling bananas in Mexico, exports have become a key part of Coliman’s business. “The United States plays a crucial role in Coliman’s distribution network, accounting for 23 percent of total exports,” shared Rios. “However, bananas are exported far beyond the American market with Japan emerging as the primary export destination. In addition, the company has strong presence in Canada, the UK, as well as various European and Asian countries. For its export business, Coliman has modified its product offering. “We’ve transitioned from conventional to organic bananas for export. This shift reflects our commitment to sustainability.”

“Over the past eight years, we’ve witnessed a clear upward trend in demand for our organic offerings and our focus has increasingly shifted to organics as a result.” As a result, the company’s breakdown conventional versus organic is 54 percent and 46 percent respectively. Since 2014, Coliman holds Rainforest Alliance as well as FairTrade certifications, emphasizing dedication to social and environmental standards.

IFPA’s Global Show
To show their expertise in organic banana production and their ability to serve countries around the globe, Coliman Bananas will be exhibiting at IFPA’s Global Produce & Floral Show in Anaheim, California on October 20 and 21. “We are looking forward to establishing valuable connections with partners and customers interested in sustainable products, as well as explore market opportunities and trends. Visit Coliman Bananas at booth 4473, hall A.

“This year, we are celebrating 45 years of success. We have remained a prominent player in the banana industry, which is a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality and sustainability,” Rios finished.
