Fruchthaus Hulsberg launches new, regional private label 'Hulsbergs Höfe':

"The transparency of our concept is especially appreciated"

Fruchthaus Hulsberg has launched its new private label brand called 'Hulsbergs Höfe' (HBH). The Ganderkesee-based company aims to establish a regional brand that highlights the freshness and diversity of regional farmers. The focus is on education, cooperation and transparency. The goods are sourced from farmers within a 50km radius, confirms the management of the company, which moved from the Bremen wholesale market to the Gewerbepark Ganderkesee a few months ago (FreshPlaza.de reported).

Fruchthaus Hulsberg aims to help restaurateurs enrich their menus with fresh, local ingredients to increase the authenticity and variety of their dishes. Pictured: potatoes from the Blankemeyer farm.

Organic vs. regional
For several years, Bremen has mandated organic fruits and vegetables for daycare centers & schools. "In my opinion, however, it would make more sense to try to adapt the menu - in the months when it is possible - to regional availability. That's why we decided to go our own way by now bringing partnerships with regional farmers closer to buyers in the canteen and daycare sector. We also realize that 'regional' has become a trendy word and we want to be pioneers by clearly defining regionality as well. That's why the products and delivery bills are marked with the HBH designation, so that everyone can recognize the goods accordingly," explains plant manager Sebastian Samborski when asked.

The next step is to get regional farmers excited about the concept and to build up a corresponding network, Samborski continues. "Many farmers have already been dependent on only one or a few buyers for many years. Our concern is to make their products available to a wider audience through our customer spectrum and logistics. We already have a reliable supplier base, which we intend to gradually expand." Initially, only fresh produce will be traded under the new brand, they confirm. The product range includes potatoes, salads, cabbage vegetables, potted herbs as well as strawberries and apples.

In its own production facility, Fruchthaus Hulsberg also processes fruit and vegetables into fresh-cut articles.

Appreciation of transparency
According to Samborski, feedback so far has been particularly positive. "There's been a lot of encouragement, including from existing customers who want to go regional. Funnily enough, we've also received several inquiries from former customers who are interested in our products again. We observe that the transparency of our concept in particular is valued. After all, the 50km radius is a clear delineation and definition of our sourcing area," concludes Samborski.
