Paul Peters, Gebr. Peters Fruithandel:

"I believe new Elstar trading began too soon"

In the Netherlands, harvesting is in full swing at Gebr. Peters Fruithandel. "We've picked a third of our pears. Last week, the kilos were still slightly disappointing, but that seems to be improving. The warm weather just mustn't last too long. There's not much ripening yet. The pears are sweeter this week, but that does affect their firmness. Flavor, however, undoubtedly determines sales," Paul Peters says.

"As things stand, we should be fine this season. Many companies have cold stores, but it's challenging to chill all the fruit and get their temperature down in time."

"Sales forecasts look good. We're already getting plenty of inquiries, but currently, the focus is on harvesting. That's the most important thing. When everything is well and truly in storage, we can start concentrating on sales. Given the shortages in Italy, I'm optimistic," Paul explains.

"Regarding Elstar, we'll definitely not get the kilos. That offers prospects for the other varieties, though. I believe trading began too early with the new crop. That did sizes and yields no good and I don't think that was needed."

"The marketing outlook is positive, but growers also desperately need that. There's a labor shortage everywhere. With all the cost increases, a price plus is definitely in order," Paul concludes.
