The fig harvest in Alguaire, in the Segriá Lleidano, started two weeks earlier than usual and everything indicates that the production volume will be greater than last season. According to Àlex Lladonosa, of the Figues la Noria company, calibers and the fruits' sweetness will be higher than in other years. "The figs will also have a greater hardness, which guarantees that the fruit will be preserved during its commercialization," he added.
He also stated that they had been able to irrigate the crops normally, with water from the Pinyana canal, and that the weather conditions recorded during winter, spring, and summer of this year had allowed the crops to develop well. It's worth noting that figs have an important foreign market in countries such as France and Germany.
In fact, this good start in the market is helping fig production to gain ground in Lleida as part of the region's commitment to fruit-crop diversification. However, the fig harvest can last until November, which translates into more labor needs. Producers have to find workers and, therefore, incur much higher costs than other crops that can be harvested in less time and with fewer workers.
