Juan Tomás Cano, president of Cohorsan, was appointed in May as the new president of the Spanish Fruit and Vegetable Inter-branch Organization (Hortiespaña), taking over from Francisco Góngora.
In his first speech as president of Hortiespaña, Cano highlighted the need to work towards more profitable and sustainable agriculture. "Sustainability is part of the DNA of our greenhouse crops. It's one of its great strengths and one that we are proud of. It's made our production system known to the world, both to administrations and consumers, just as Hortiespaña has been doing all this time. Profitability is essential to continue being sustainable. If our agriculture ceases to be profitable, it will cease to be sustainable. Simply put, it would cease to be. We can't allow this agricultural model, which is an example of how to do things well from a social and environmental point of view, to stop being economically sustainable."
Regarding the 2022/23 campaign, he said: "This campaign has been very atypical with many mismatches between supply and demand. In general terms, I would say that the autumn-winter campaign was good but that it was bad in spring. There is no doubt that the adaptability demonstrated by the companies is a point in favor of being able to grow in times of uncertainty. Now we have to think about the next campaign and the new doubts and uncertainties that will have to face, such as our competitors' growth, the economic recession, the increase in production costs, and the geopolitical scenario, among other issues."
"Despite all of this, I'm very excited about it," he stated. "We'll have a bright future if we continue to do things well. The people in our sector are very prepared and professional. We can't let our guard down because the competition from third countries will be much greater than before and we have to face it from a position of strength."
