Portuguese blueberry season coming to an end in a few weeks

“This year has been, by far, our best blueberry season yet”

It’s almost time for celebrations at Portuguese blueberry exporter Logofruits as the season nears its end. Lourenço de Botton states they’ve exporter more blueberries than ever this season: “This year has been, by far, our best blueberry season yet. Not only is this the year with the highest volumes we’ve had, but also our quality has been great throughout the entire season. This in turn has resulted in very high satisfaction from our customers and we don’t expect any issues in the remaining three to four weeks. On top of that all, the average selling price has also been the highest this year, which is also a relevant factor for a company like ours.”

The increase in production isn’t going to be a one-off, de Botton explains. There’s another huge increase in volumes expected next year. “As this was the season with the highest production ever for Logofruits, we expect to finish with about 1300 tons of blueberries sold in total. This was already a huge increase from last year’s production and we foresee another increase in 2024, of roughly 30 per cent. For the remainder of the current season, we expect it’ll last for another three to four weeks and it should be smooth sailing right up until the end of the season.”

Thankfully, demand has also been rather strong this year, which means Logofruits has been able to sell all of their produce: “With all that happened in terms of climate, we found demand to be higher and last for longer than usual seasons. It was for sure a different year from what we’ve been experiencing in the past and thankfully we were able to make the best out of it. Our strongest markets for the blueberry export are clearly located in Northern Europe, with Germany, Sweden, France and Finland amongst our strongest countries to export to,” de Botton concludes.
