Miracle berry makes sour or tart fruits naturally sweeter

“The miracle berry originates in Ghana, West Africa and that’s where we source it directly from our own farms,” says Dr Emmanuel Asare, MD with MiraBurst, founded in 2014. “What’s special about this berry is that it is the world’s only natural taste-modifying superfruit. This means it helps everyone enjoy other healthy but otherwise sour or tart fruits, foods, and drinks without the need to add any sugar or sweetener.”

The pulp of the berry contains an active ingredient called miraculin. When the berry is consumed, miraculin activates the taste buds on the tongue and tricks the mind to perceive sour or tart as sweet. As an example, a miracle berry makes berries, lemon or lemon water taste sweet. “The berry gives a clean, sweet taste to any sour or tart fruit, food, or drink without any aftertaste or any potential long-term health concerns. It is a unique, safe, healthy, non-GMO, non-caloric alternative to sugar and sweeteners that nature has given us,” commented Dr Asare.

MiraBurst, the grower behind the miracle berry, is vertically integrated. In addition to growing, the company controls all aspects of the supply chain. “This allows us to quickly scale up production to meet global consumer demand and to control product quality.”

While miracle berries benefit everyone, these groups in particular can take advantage of a low-sugar lifestyle by enjoying more healthy sour or tart fruits:

  • Diabetics and Pre-diabetics.
  • Children.
  • Weight-conscious individuals.
  • Health-conscious individuals.
  • Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Miracle berries can help mask the metallic taste associated with chemotherapy in about 50 percent of the patients and help chemotherapy patients enjoy normal food.

Freeze-dried alternatives
While the berry can be consumed fresh, it’s best to keep the berry frozen at all times due to its highly perishable nature. “This keeps the strength of the active ingredient miraculin intact”. Since it can be quite expensive to keep the berry frozen from the farm all the way to the consumer, it has been converted into a freeze-dried whole berry and a Mini Square to prolong the shelf-life and make it easier to carry around. Both options have the exact same natural composition as the fresh miracle berry.

The freeze-dried whole berry is a freeze-dried version of the fresh miracle berry. “The berries are frozen to extremely low temperatures and then freeze-dried by extracting water from the berry under freezing temperatures. This allows for the miracle berry to be packaged without any additives or preservatives. It also prolongs the shelf life and allows consumers to carry it around easily. Some of the berries are also converted into powder and compressed into squares without any additives or preservatives (see image regarding the process below). The trademarked MiraBurst Mini Squares have the exact same natural composition as the miracle berry but are packaged as Mini Squares to prolong the shelf life.

Long-distance shipping
Both the freeze-dried whole berries and the Mini Squares allow for long-distance shipping. “Both variations enable customers to enjoy the miracle berry anywhere around the world.” While MiraBurst currently ships its miracle berry products to the US, it has the ability to ship to any country in the world. The berry is sold online, but partnerships with retail companies and other businesses are of interest as they would give as many people as possible access to the berry.

Future availability
The MiraBurst team in Ghana has invested years of researching all the different miracle berry varieties, which has resulted in identifying the best variety for propagation. “Seeds of fruits from the best variety of the miracle berry are used to produce seedlings in our own nurseries for our farms,” says Dr. Asare. “This ensures the berries have the highest taste-modifying effect as well as yield.”
