The peach and nectarine export season from Georgia is becoming increasingly active. A representative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia told EastFruit that at the beginning of the week export supporting group, assisting farmers in issuing phytosanitary and custom documentation with a one-stop principle, started operating in the Kakheti region.
The current season is expected to yield an average harvest of peaches and nectarines. Although some orchards have experienced damage from hail and the spread of diseases due to prolonged rains, these factors are not anticipated to have a significant impact on the overall yield.
Currently, farmers report that the wholesale price of peaches and nectarines ranges from 1-1.2 GEL/kg ($0.38-$0.45), which they consider to be lower than the prices observed in the previous season. Farmers recall that prices at the beginning of the previous season reached up to 2-3 GEL/kg ($0.68-$1.02). The decrease in prices is attributed by farmers to the depreciation of the Russian ruble and lower demand at the start of the season. As the export season has just begun, farmers are uncertain about how future prices will change.
For the season of 2022, EastFruit started collecting seasonal peach prices in the final week of June. The season commenced with an average wholesale price of 2 GEL/kg ($0.68), while the minimum price of the season, 1 GEL/kg ($0.37), was reached in the first week of August.
