Peruvian Hass avocado exports will grow in 2023, but less than initially projected

“I hope we don't ship more than 600 containers of Hass avocado to Europe per week”

According to data from the Peruvian Hass Avocado Producers Association (ProHass), at week 21, Peru has exported to Europe 6,952 containers of Hass avocado (149,468 tons), i.e. 15% more than in the same period of 2022.

The president of Prohass, Juan Carlos Paredes Rosales, said that so far they had exported 43.7% of the 15,900 containers (341,850 tons) they expected to export to Europe. Initially, forecasts were the country would send 16,683 containers (358,685 tons) to the European market. However, that estimate had to be readjusted because the caliber of the fruit obtained was lower than expected (they are 10 to 15% smaller than expected).

The president of ProHass said that, since there are lower volumes of Hass avocado, shipments can be better ordered. “I hope we don't ship more than 600 containers per week to Europe, but there have already been 2 or 3 weeks in which we have exported more than 700 containers.”

Total exports and other markets
According to Juan Carlos Paredes, in January of this year, ProHass estimated it would ship 29,023 containers (624,000 tons) of Hass avocado worldwide, i.e. 12.5% more than the 25,790 containers (554,498 tons) it exported in 2022. Now, this growth is expected to be in the order of 5 to 10%.

“Until week 21, Peru grew 70% of what it expected to grow this year, having exported only 40% of the fruit. That means that much of our projected growth has already been carried out,” he said.

Regarding the United States market, he said that it is currently very supplied with the offer of Mexico and California, so the Peruvian avocado has still not been directed to that destination. He also said that the situation in the Asian market was similar to that registered in Europe, so at week 22, Peruvian avocado shipments to that continent increased in volume by +71%, and estimates are the country will export 3,588 containers shipped (77,142 tons) to that destination in 2023, i.e. 44.3% more than in 2022.

Finally, up until week 22, Peru exported 1,194 containers of Hass avocado to Chile (25,671 tons), i.e. 45% more than the 825 containers (17,738 tons) shipped to that destination in the same period of the previous year.
