Peru will host the Ginger Week 2023, which will take place online as a free event on May 31, June 1 and 2, 2023. Due to the importance of ginger in the central jungle of Peru, the third edition of Ginger Week opens, an event specialized in ginger and turmeric, founded by Elisur Organic, in search of the sustainability of ginger and its biodiverse environment. This year, through the co-organization of ADEX (Association of Exporters of Peru) it will bring together the key players in the ginger sector in Peru and present a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and market perspectives. Lectures will be given by national and international experts.
Peru is the 4th largest exporter of ginger in the world, after China, the Netherlands, and India, according to ADEX. Since the pandemic, ginger has captured the world's attention with its spicy flavour and remarkable medicinal properties.
Factors that impacted the ginger season
However, overproduction, increased maritime tariffs and economic reactivation affected the price in the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons, reaching the lowest price peaks recorded in the last 10 years. This is one of the main factors behind why farmers in Peru reduced their planted area for the 2023-2024 season, which is about to begin.
Since the opening of the new season in China, with a lower supply compared to previous years, January 2023 witnessed a growing trend in demand for Peruvian ginger in the main importing markets. A 200% increase in volume was registered compared to April 2022, exceeding expectations on the export side. This increase in demand drove prices to recover at the end of the season, generating hopes of a positive return for farmers who bet on continuing with their production for one more season. The new Peruvian season will start with the first ginger harvests in June.
“The ginger sector in Peru is a sector that has been getting more important in recent years. It is one of the main products exported from the central jungle of Peru, so we must work to strengthen this chain to continue being well positioned in the world,” concludes Camargo.
