Uzbekistan: new crop onion prices halved in one week

Over the past week, wholesale prices for onions of a new crop have decreased by 2 times, which is explained by a sharp increase in the volume of onion supply in the domestic market. In turn, this circumstance puts pressure on the prices of last year’s onions, and wholesale prices for them fell by 17% over this period, EastFruit analysts say.

According to EastFruit price monitoring, from April 14 to April 21, 2023, the average wholesale price for onions of a new crop decreased from 8 000 to 4 000 UZS/kg (from $0.70 to $0.35) and the current average wholesale price equaled the last year’s level, noted at the same date in 2022.

If we compare onion prices with other countries where the EastFruit team carries out weekly monitoring for fruits and vegetables, as of April 21, 2023, the average wholesale price for new crop onions in Uzbekistan is 2.8 times lower than in Georgia ($0.99/kg), but 30% higher than in Tajikistan ($0.27/kg).

Over the past week, wholesale prices for last year’s onion have also decreased, which is explained by the fact that a sharp increase in the supply of new crop onions in the domestic market of Uzbekistan is putting pressure on last year’s onion prices. From April 14 to April 21, 2023, the average wholesale price for last year’s onions decreased from 6 000 to 5 000 UZS/kg (from $0.70 to $0.35). At the same time, as of April 21, 2023, the average wholesale price for last year’s onions is almost 1.5 times higher than on the same date last year.

It should be noted that the current wholesale prices for onions from last year’s harvest in Uzbekistan are the lowest among the countries where EastFruit monitors wholesale prices for fruits and vegetables. As of April 21, 2023, the average wholesale price for last year’s onions in the countries of the region was (in US dollars per 1 kg): Uzbekistan – $0.44; Tajikistan – $0.60; Moldova – $0.83; Poland – $0.83; Georgia – $0.99; Ukraine – $1.15.
