The first asparagus was cut on 21st March this year at Scottish grower Denhead Farms in Coupar Angus. This was a whole 4 weeks earlier than last year.
“This was the first year of commercial volumes from our cosy tunnels, these are covered right to the ground and have doors at the ends. We will start cutting the asparagus from our Spanish tunnels soon and then onto the open ground production,” said Karen Neill from Denhead Farms.
“Having asparagus so early this year allowed us to supply the Easter demand, our customers from last year were looking forward to it and we have many new ones onboard too. The early crop goes to our chefs in the hotels, many of them Michelin Star. As well as green asparagus we also grow a purple variety 'Erasmus' which we are taking the first cut of this year and selling to restaurants as well as from our farmstand.”
Denhead Farms also supplies retail customers, this will start at the end of the month when the bigger volumes are available.
