Maarten van Damme, Dacomex:

"Onion market trending down rather than up"

The onion market seems to be stabilizing. "Prices are under some pressure rather than rising," says Maarten van Damme of the Dutch company Dacomex. "Just like with the exchange listing, a few cents are coming off every week. The bale price for medium and large onions is around €0.75 to €0.80."

"In markets where we'd expected high demand, like Eastern Europe, unanticipated local product or onions from other countries are becoming available, after all. That's not a big deal, though. The new season doesn't start for a while. For the next three weeks, we'll have to make do with the old crop still available in the Netherlands anyway."

"New crops won't arrive in Europe for three weeks. But the entire market stands or falls with what's actually there and what's still needed," Maarten explains. "If more onions are needed in the coming weeks than we thought, prices should rebound."

Most current exports are toward the European market. "Spain and England want onions; some go to Eastern Europe and a random container outside Europe. Quality-wise, it's been a good year. There are no more inferior onions because nobody dares take risks with these high prices. That's an immediate advantage for us and strengthens our position compared to a country like Egypt," Maarten concludes.
