Sjan van Gorsel, Reijnpack:

"Smooth chicory sales; especially to Germany and Italy"

European chicory is currently selling well. "At Belgian auctions, the price is between €1.30 and €1.40, and sales of packaged chicory, too, continue well. Italy and Germany are particularly good markets for chicory," says Sjan van Gorsel of the chicory packing company Reijnpack in the Netherlands.

Reijnpack's Martine Lisseveld-Reijngoudt and Wiljan Lisseveld.

"Prices are at a very different level to last year, but there's also far less supply. France, for example, has 20% less chicory, which certainly affects the market situation. Here, too, the 2022 chicory root harvest was lower, so there's no reason for prices not to remain good."

Unlike white chicory, red chicory sales are struggling this year. "Last year, these sold very well, but in January and February, sales were awful. There was no demand at all for loose red chicory. That's improved slightly now, as have prices," Sjan concludes.

Reijnpack grows chicory on 160 hectares and cools, forces, processes, weighs, and packages around 45,000 500g tray and flows packs. That makes this one company one of the largest in the Dutch chicory sector.

Two years ago, the company introduced a revolutionary chicory packaging line that saves considerable staff. That did not go unnoticed, and this year Reijnpack is one of the five nominees for Agricultural Entrepreneur of the Year 2023. The public can still vote for Reijnpack until March 29.
