"Demand and prices for colored pineapple remain stable, while those for green pineapple have fallen, despite scarcity"

The vast majority of pineapples currently consumed in Spain come from Costa Rica. Although the demand is not high at this time of the year, that for colored pineapples has remained stable so far this year, while consumption of green pineapples continues to fall.

"The pineapple supply is at the usual level for this time of the year. After Christmas, both the supply and the demand usually drop in Spain," said Patricia Antón, Import Manager of the company Cultivar, who said that production costs at origin, logistics costs for importation, as well as the costs of packaging materials all continue to rise.

"Compared to 2022, the demand and prices for colored pineapple remain stable, while the demand for green pineapples is falling despite the current shortage," he says. "We closed the year 2022 with a growth of colored pineapple volumes, which now exceed those of green pineapples, which were the dominant ones years ago," he says.

Pineapples are one of the main products marketed by Cultivar. Its main market is Spain, where it supplies large-scale retailers, as well as other wholesalers, retailers and caterers through the wholesale markets where it is present. Although they also export, they are mostly focused on the domestic market.

"We continue promoting the sale of our brand EXOTICA PREMIUM, which we only use for the best quality pineapples from our most trusted suppliers. Under this brand we always pack colored pineapples in different formats and with various presentations, trying to innovate with new packaging, labeling, taping, etc.", said Patricia Antón.
