Week 7 Wholesale Fruit Market Report

China: Avocado prices rise sharply, Australian prune market hit by Chilean stonefruit

The imported fruit market has recently been dominated by imported stone fruits, among which prunes account for the largest proportion. Due to the late arrival of Australian prunes this year, the sales have been directly impacted by Chilean prunes. The arrivals of imported avocados have been low in the past two months, and the price has been soaring.

In addition to prunes, Chilean stone fruits currently on the market include, Candy Red, cherry plums, and nectarines, which are arriving one after another. Chilean prunes are still airfreighted this week. According to the merchants, as of now, the total amount of Chilean prunes arriving is less than in the same period last year, and the price is higher. Due to the decline in market demand after the Spring Festival, sales have been stable. In addition, the arrival of Chilean prunes by sea will have a certain impact on the sales of air cargo in the near future.

Australian stone fruits include prunes, Queen Garnet plums, Sugar Plum with prunes being the main ones. According to merchants, this year, Australian prunes were launched late this year, and they were hit by Chilean prunes, so sales were slow. In previous years, Australian prunes were launched before the Spring Festival. Due to the holiday and Chilean similar fruits were not on the market, the sales were satisfactory. However, this year's concentrated arrival period was delayed by nearly half a month. Most of the products arrived after the Spring Festival and were launched almost at the same time as Chilean prunes. There are many similar fruits in the market and there is no price advantage, so the fruits are selling slowly.

Grapes imported from South Africa and Peru

In terms of avocados, the Chilean avocado season is coming to an end, the Peruvian season is starting, and a small amount of Yunnan avocados are on sale. It is understood that the arrival of avocados imported from Peru and Chile in the past two months has dropped significantly compared with the same period last year, and the price has more than doubled. According to merchants, the price of avocados imported from Peru was about ¥80-¥90/box in the same period last year, and the current price is about ¥210/box, an increase of more than double. The price of Chilean avocados is even higher, and the price of domestic avocados is driven by the market, and the price rises accordingly. Since the subsequent arrivals did not see a significant increase, merchants estimate that the price of imported avocados will remain at a high level for a period of time.

In terms of other imported fruits, according to information, the current arrival price of imported grapes is generally higher than last year, and the current taste has gradually improved compared with earlier, but the taste in the same period last year was more ideal. Some merchants also said that the arrival of grapes has decreased recently. Egyptian lemons are currently on sale, but sales have been impacted by domestic lemons. A small amount of Greek kiwifruit is on sale, but due to the impact of domestic ones, sales are also slow.

The domestic blueberry market has fluctuated. There was a decline earlier but it has picked up recently. Due to the small volume of imported blueberries, the sales are generally smooth. Yellow Pitaya is a relatively expensive variety among domestic fruits, and it has been on the market more and more.
