Egyptian spring onion shortage leads to 80% price increase

Prices for Egyptian spring onions have significantly increased. According to Mai Yassin, export manager at Egyptian fresh produce exporter Stars of Export, this is due a shortage of spring onions on the market: “The demand for spring onions is very high these days, partly due to the shortage on spring onions at the moment. This shortage has led to an 80% increase in the price, although this isn’t extra profit. Costs in Egypt have also increased, especially with the specific sorting that we do, to supply only the highest quality spring onions. The price increase resulted in us doing less business with the UK market this season, as the price level was too high for their liking. At this point in the season, the weather is the main subject of the talks in Egypt. A lot of land has been damaged by the weather and we’ll need to be careful in selecting the lands to be used.”

Stars of Export was an exhibitor at Fruit Logistica. Yassin states that the move to the CityCube did not net positive results: “For us, Fruit Logistica has always been the best place to meet most of our clients within two to three days. However, as an exhibitor you also expect a certain number of visitors and unexpected inquiries. In that regard, this edition of Fruit Logistica wasn’t good to us. Normally, the stands from Egypt could be found in hall 2.1, as it has been for the past 13 years. This year, we were moved to Hall B, also known as the CityCube.”

“For us, it was the first time back in Berlin since the pandemic and the location proved to be a difficult one. Clients had trouble finding us and we’ve had to answer many calls to give people direction. The overall traffic is also less than we’re used to, as Hall B is not a hall people travel through. My father has exhibited at Fruit Logistica for many years before I started coming along, and he felt there used to be a different spirit and force within the event,” Yassin concludes.
