33rd Asparagus Day in Karlsruhe on 23 November

Asparagus cultivation of tomorrow

On the first day of the expoSE/expoDirekt trade fair on November 23, the Agricultural Office in the Karlsruhe District Office will offer in cooperation with the South German Association of Asparagus and Strawberry Growers e.V. also this year an Asparagus Day. The Asparagus Day, which is already being held for the 33rd time, will give visitors the opportunity for further education and an exchange of experiences in the form of lectures and discussions.

Department President Dr. Ulrich Kraft of the Karlsruhe Regional Council will start the ceremony. Afterwards, the event will be opened by an international guest. The asparagus day program will be led by Angelika Appel, fruit and horticulture advisor at the Karlsruhe Regional Council, and Isabelle Kokula, asparagus advisor in the district office Karlsruhe.

The asparagus and the community of soil organisms
"The asparagus and the community of soil organisms" is the title of the lecture by Professor Giusto Giovanetti from Turin. Professor Giusto Giovanetti did research for a long time at the University of Turin in the Botanical Garden area. Working closely with truffle farmers in Piedmont, he studied the management of traditional truffle areas and came across the community of soil organisms as a crucial component for the growth of the precious tubers. In his lecture on the community of soil organisms, he will explain the interaction of soil organisms in relation to the cultivation of asparagus, but also in the larger context of the endangered biodiversity of our habitats. The lecture will take place in Italian (double presentation in two languages) and will be translated into German in parallel.

Intensive use of film in asparagus cultivation - profitable? Climate friendly? Indispensable?
Joachim Ziegler is head of the Horticulture Department at the Dienstleistungszentrum Ländlicher Raum Rheinpfalz. Due to his experience from many years of trials in the field of film application in asparagus cultivation at the Queckbrunnerhof in Schifferstadt, he is considered the leading expert in this field far beyond the borders of Rhineland-Palatinate. In his lecture, he will address the critical, or rather the criticized, aspects of the use of film. On the one hand, it is about the profitability of the foil use under consideration of the past years, as well as about the comparison of regional early measures in comparison to imported early commodity. In addition to current information on the use of film, the topic of sustainability will be a focus of the presentation.

Avoiding asparagus browning - causes and solutions
In this lecture, Dr. Ludger Aldenhoff will address browning of the asparagus spears, which recurs every harvest year under certain conditions. Based on his own experiments and the interpretation of countless soil and root tests, he explains the influence of individual nutrients associated with this appearance and describes the interactions with the soil and the weather. Dr. Ludger Aldenhoff has been an asparagus consultant for the Beratungsdienst Spargel und Erdbeeren e.V. for over 20 years.

The focus of his consulting work is on plant protection and plant nutrition. Numerous own trials on various topics of crop management form the basis for his current explanations and recommendations.

Asparagus harvest of tomorrow: Selective harvesting with the AVL Motion
Bernhard Böckenhoff, Managing Director of Böckenhoff Folien Ltd, is a well-known speaker at the Asparagus Day Karlsruhe as a trader and specialist for recycling asparagus films. This year, he will present the AVL Motion, a selective and autonomous robot for asparagus harvesting. Given the high cost and manpower required to harvest asparagus, precision-operated machines for autonomous
and selective harvesting of asparagus could be a relief in the future.

Wild asparagus - Asparagus acutifolius: Cultivation and Growing
At the end of the lecture series, Mojcar Rehar Klancic from Šempas, Slovenia, will present her experience of growing and cultivating wild asparagus. Mojcar Rehar Klancic studied Agriculture and has been running a perennial nursery in Šempas for 25 years. With great passion she has focused on the development of propagation methods of wild Asparagus acutifolius for the last seven years. This variety has been traditionally collected in her homeland, as well as in many other Mediterranean regions. She recommends wild asparagus not only for use in home gardens, but also gives it a chance here in professional cultivation to offer a specialty to customers in direct marketing. The lecture will be held in English (double presentation in two languages) and will be translated into German in parallel.
