According to data compiled by Hortoinfo from Faostat, Spain has the highest yields per square meter in watermelon cultivation among the 20 largest watermelon producers in the world, with a figure of 5.71 kg/m². It is followed by Italy with an average yield of 4.85 kg/m² and Turkey with 4.47 kg/m².
Worldwide watermelon production stood at 101,620.45 million kilos obtained on 3,053,258 hectares and the average yield of all countries was 3.33 kg/m².
In 2020, China was the world's largest producer with 60,083.39 million kilos, accounting for 59.12% of the world's total watermelon production, which it grew on 1,397,658 hectares achieving an average yield of 4.3 kg/m².
It was followed by Turkey with 3,491.55 million kilos of watermelon produced on 78,179 hectares and a yield of 4.47 kg/m².
India ranked third with 2,787 million kilos produced on 110,000 hectares and a yield of 2.53 kg/m².
Spain's competition
In 2020, Spain was the world's fifteenth largest watermelon producer with 1,234.85 million kilos obtained on 21,620 hectares and an average yield of 5.71 kg/m².
The Spanish production competes against the production from Turkey, which we already mentioned, and the watermelon from Morocco, a country that produced 677.34 million kilos of watermelon in 16,812 hectares in 2020, achieving a yield of 4.03 kg/m². Senegal, another competitor, produced 1,677.48 million kilos on 86,564 hectares and had an average yield of 1.94 kg/m².
