A new brand for Siena new potatoes, commercialized exclusively on the Italian market by Apulian company RO.GR.AN: they will be launched in late February/early March under the "Caterina6" brand.
Siena is a new potato variety with a cycle of 120 days, very early and grown on the red lands of the Lecce province, in Apulia. It was created thanks to the exclusive collaboration between the owner of the variety - Dutch company The Potato Company (TPC) - and the Apulian company.
"Potatoes have an oblong shape, yellow flesh, thin yellow-golden peel, surface eyes with a dry matter content of 20.5%. They are grown strictly along the Ionian coast of Salento using methods we could define as 'artisanal'. The natural resistance to diseases and the winter-spring climate enable a production with chemical residues close to zero," explains Francesco Romano, director of RO.GR.AN.
"With the Caterina6 brand, we aim at standing out on the Italian and foreign market and we want to provide final consumers with the chance to purchase our Siena new potatoes with a name that guarantees uniformity of product and high quality."
"We have chosen an Italian name reminiscent of the patron of Italy and Europe - Catherine of Siena. We hope we can bring our product to all EU states and Switzerland."
Romano stresses that, in general, the high cost of Apulian potatoes hinders commercial opportunities on the foreign markets. "Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco are the main suppliers with their low prices. The only thing that is left to us is to stand out with a captivating brand that can convey the goodness and rurality of our territory."
Use
"We recommend using grades 20-50 for steaming and larger grades to make fries, as they do not blacken and they remain crunchy. Siena is ideal for fried-food vendors who do not want to use frozen products. Cooking these potatoes in the oven exalts their characteristics even more, so they are considered ideal for the restaurant business."
"Our website containing exclusive recipes created by local chefs will be online soon. We can also provide a wooden display stand for supermarket chains. Siena potatoes under the Caterina6 brand will be packaged with plastic-free materials that respect the environment."
