Due to inclement weather, this year Lleida will have its shortest pear harvest in history with production drops of 20 to 30% in northern European countries.

"This situation can be favorable for Lleida's pear in general, as it won't have a very strong competition from abroad and prices can be better defended," stated Manel Simon, CEO of Afrucat.
According to Gerard Pujol, the president of the Pera de Lleida Protected Designation of Origin, 30% of the harvest in the 600 hectares registered in the Pera de Lleida PDO have been lost so this year's potential could reach 4 million kilos of extra quality, which is the only one that the council markets under the PDO seal.

The heat continues to benefit the pear covered by the designation of origin, which is achieving the Brix degrees that the pear needs to be sweet. "Thus, the pears from the Pera de Lleida PDO are entering the market with optimal taste conditions and a good russeting quality in terms of the Conference variety," Gerard Pujol stated.

The president of the PDO said prices could be similar to the ones achieved last year and that the sale of the Lleida pear will not be affected by inclement weather because PDO pears are always a top selection of the entire certified harvest.
