All the criteria were met for the Moroccan watermelon campaign to be a success (quantity, quality and calibers), but prices are down on the national and international market.
Retail prices vary between 1 and 1.5 DH/kg [0.11 and 0.17 USD/kg] on the local market and in nearly all production regions. On the international market, it seems that the weather could be the cause of this drop in prices. “The same Moroccan watermelons are quoted between 1 and 1.10 €/kg [1.20 and 1.32 USD/kg] on the Rungis market, a price considered low compared to two weeks ago,” explains Bladi.
Note that a general decline in prices is observed on the European market, according to the Spanish agricultural organization Asaja-Almeria. “This week, melon and watermelon prices have dropped by 30% in some cases.”
