In the Ivory Coast, the mango season's been over for two weeks. And the last containers from Mali will arrive in the Netherlands next week. As usual, Hars&Hagebauer will begin importing early from southern Senegal. That's to ensure a good link.
"The African season has been disappointing so far, pricing-wise. That's unexpected because the harvest wasn't even that big. But Brazil had a large supply. And supermarket prices were low. So, the law of communicating vessels came into force. That's a pity. In this sector, you can't pass the buck to the chain's first link, i.e., consumers," says Henk van der Meij.
The importer thinks the upcoming supplies will be calm. "The volumes from Senegal will increase from the end of June. The big question is, what the rain's effect will be. Rain means fruit flies. And that could mean an early end to the season. As always, the mango market is generally risky and uncertain. But fortunately, people have a beacon of hope in this turbulent market - us," Henk concludes.
