Hessing starts construction of new production location in Greenport Venlo

Hessing has started construction of a new vegetable production location in Horst aan de Maas, Greenport Venlo. The first lot of concrete was poured on Wednesday, in the presence of Joost van den Akker, deputy of the Province of Limburg, Ryan Palmen, mayor of Horst aan de Maas and alderman Rudy Tegels. The new production location is close to the largest horticultural areas in the Netherlands, enabling Hessing to process local, fresh products more quickly and respond even better to the rapidly growing consumer demand for fresh fruit and vegetables.

Director Frank Hessing and construction project manager Michiel Louwe Kooijmans pour the first concrete of the new production location in the presence of Deputy Van den Akker, Mayor Palmen, Alderman Tegels and director of the construction company Frank van de Ven.

Production location ready for future demand
Processing fresh vegetables into fresh quality products, such as meal salads, requires speed and flexibility. 'Harvested yesterday, processed today, in the shop tomorrow' is the starting point. Frank Hessing, director of Hessing Supervers: “From the end of 2023, Hessing will produce a large proportion of all processed vegetables at the new production location in Horst aan de Maas. By automating and robotising processes, the fresh vegetables flow faster through the factory. There will soon be even fresher, ready-to-cook vegetable products in the store. Faster availability leads to less waste on the shelf. Automating processes also makes the organisation flexible in order to be able to respond better to future and changing demand.”

Growth from Venlo and Zwaagdijk
The choice of a new location in Limburg makes it possible for Hessing to grow further. Noord-Limburg is the hotspot for the agro- and agro-industrial industry and with the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo it has a unique research facility in the field of healthy nutrition. Hessing will centralize a number of its existing production locations in Horst aan de Maas. For example, the processing of the vegetables that now takes place in Helmond and Belfeld will soon be moved to the new location. This also applies to a number of production lines and the expedition from Zwaagdijk. The location in Zwaagdijk will remain open and will continue to produce some of the vegetables.
