Both the flowering and fruit setting are developing well in the stone fruit producing areas of Badajoz, in Extremadura. "We hope that the weather will allow us to have a good harvest this year. We have high hopes for 2021," said a representative of Gevora Fruits.

Named after the town of Badajoz where its packing plant is located, Gevora Fruits is a company recently created by several producers from Extremadura.

Earlier last year, around 2,000 hectares of fruit tree plantations were uprooted in Extremadura due to the poor results achieved in previous campaigns. This mostly concerned some old varieties of plums and other stone fruits that had failed to adapt to current market demands.

"Given this, the producing partners that make up this new company have invested in more innovative varieties, with a better flavor and suitable for shipments over long distances," said the company representative. "We expect to produce between 10,000 and 15,000 tons of plums, pears, peaches, nectarines and flat peaches this year, although we hope to continue growing and become a leading company in the coming years."

Gevora Fruits has 16,000 m2 of fully equipped facilities with a processing capacity of more than 40,000 tons and a refrigeration capacity of 4,000 tons. "We are really looking after our farms, as we want our production to be exceptional. Our technical department is checking the facilities and the packaging machinery so that they can operate at full capacity once the season starts."

The Badajoz-based company will focus its shipments on European markets, initially Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and other central European countries.
