Xiuwen kiwifruit from Guizhou on the list

EU-China agreement on GI products comes into effect

A bilateral agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Government of the People's Republic of China on cooperation and protection concerning geographical indications (GIs) recently came into effect.

According to the agreement, 275 products from China and the EU each, a total of 550 products, will receive mutual GI recognition and protection, which will allow these products to enter each other’s markets more easily while gaining a higher level of intellectual property protection.

A total of 15 GI products from Guizhou are included in the list, including Xiuwen kiwifruit.

The Xiuwen kiwifruit has a long history in local cultivation. The main variety is "Guizhang” bred from wild kiwifruit growing in the local mountains, showing marked regional and varietal characteristics.

The fruit weighs an average of 70-110 grams, shaped like a cylinder. The flesh is emerald green in color, and the cross-section shows light-colored stripes, with white or light yellow hearts. The body of the fruit is tender and pulpy, giving out a sweet taste mixed with a good amount of tartness.
