Just before Christmas, lamb's lettuce is traditionally more often on the menu in Germany. The frost-resistant vegetable is increasingly harvested in the open field from October to February, reaching a peak demand shortly before the holidays. FeSa O & G Handels LLC Co. has increased their area under cultivation this year, due to an increased demand. We spoke with Managing Director Jochen Fehmel.

"Currently, demand is a little weaker than expected, but we expect a usual increase as Christmas approaches. The target figures are already quite high, even if consumers are currently holding back a bit," Fehmel notes.
"We have loose goods for the wholesale market in our range, which are currently being sold satisfactorily. For set goods, mainly for German food retailers, where the lamb's lettuces are sold ready for presentation, prices are at a good level. At these prices, however, the margin for the grower tends to be smaller, because this type of presentation requires a lot of additional effort."

A special feature in the assortment of FeSa are the mini boxes with lamb's lettuce: "These boxes are disposable boxes with a weight of 300 to 350g. These boxes are visually very appealing and are popular around the holidays."
Fehmel sells its lamb's lettuce primarily through wholesale markets and food retailers throughout Germany - and has been doing so since the 1990s. "We also harvest and sell lamb's lettuce during the holidays. That's how we've established ourselves as a supplier to retailers over the past 30 years."
