Hungarian apple and pear production volumes will be halved this year

The price of vegetables in Hungary has risen only slightly compared to last year. Some products, such as tomatoes, have actually seen their prices drop, but unfortunately, the same cannot be said about fruit.

The catastrophic spring weather has made fruit more expensive than last year, reported the president of the horticultural and supplier department of the National Chamber of Agriculture, Béla Mártonffy.

From the end of March, three-day nocturnal frosts spoiled apricot, peach, cherry, pear and apple crops every 8-10 days.

According to data from the National Chamber of Agriculture, this year the prospect is to produce 40-50 percent fewer apples, as well as 50-60 percent fewer pears compared to an average year.

As shown in the latest report from the Central Statistical Office, in August, consumer prices were on average 3.9 percent higher than a year earlier. Food prices rose by 7.9 percent year-on-year, and seasonal food prices became 17.1 percent more expensive. The price of fruit has risen by 46 percent, and that of apples, for example, is twice as high as last year. Unfortunately, given the impact of climate change, fruit may remain expensive in Europe for years to come.
