This week, most Russian growers have started harvesting the late onion varieties, whose demand and prices are traditionally much higher, according to analysts of the EastFruit project. Producers report that trade activity in the onion market has grown significantly, and that shipments of quality products have been scheduled until the end of the week. Another factor behind the rise in prices in this segment is the rainy weather recorded in some regions of the Southern Federal District.
So, producers are currently willing to sell high-quality onions for no less than 9-14 rubles / kg ($ 0.12-0.19 / kg), which is on average 22% more expensive than a week earlier.
The main reason for the rise in onion prices, according to experts, is the fact that many farms have been forced to bring the harvest to a halt due to rainy weather, which has significantly reduced the supply of these products on the market. Analysts also report that growers prefer to store most of the good quality onions and sell them in small batches.
It is worth noting that the price of onions on the Russian market is still 10% lower on average than in the same period last year, although most of the key players predict further price increases in this segment. They argue that wholesale companies will soon begin to buy onions for storage.
