Canary Government pays €141 million to PGI banana producers

The Councilor of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands has made the last outstanding payment (of 71 million Euro) of the 141 million Euro assigned to support PGI banana producers. This has been done in the framework of the Community Support Program for Agricultural Productions of the Canary Islands (POSEI) corresponding to the 2019 campaign.

This grant, financed by the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (EAGF), will reach some 7,700 banana producers in the Archipelago.

The Councilor of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Alicia Vanoostende, said that this grant aims to "protect the crop on the islands, strengthening the sector's structure through producer organizations, which promote a quality product that is also unique and environmentally-friendly, as well as competitive."

Vanoostende stressed "the complexity of processing such aid as a consequence of both the state of alarm and the changes in personnel that have taken place in recent months. Therefore, she thanked the workers of the Council "for their commitment and the great work they have carried out."
