According to the latest status report of the citrus campaign in Castellón prepared by the Council of Agriculture, the price of clementines in the province has recorded a notable increase due to a production shortage. Meanwhile, the price of oranges has barely changed compared to two years ago, when there was a similar production to the current one. For their part, mandarins with royalties continue to function independently.
Skyrocketing clementine prices
As the report highlights, varieties such as Clemenules and Clemenvilla have seen their prices rise compared to last season, with increases of 20 cents per kilo compared to last year and of 10 cents "compared to the 2017/2018 campaign in the case of the Clemenules, and of € 0.18 / kg compared to the previous campaign and about € 0.11 / kg compared to the 2017/2018 campaign in the case of the Clemenvilla."
This has to do with the drop in the production, especially for small fruit, "with a clear reduction both in the first part of the campaign and in the second," says the report.
Oranges, prices and volumes similar to two years ago
When it comes to oranges, while prices stand above those of last season, they are still very similar, and even in some cases lower than those of two years ago. One of the best performing varieties has been the Navel Lane Late, with the same prices as in the 2017/2018 season in the province of Valencia and an increase of just 3 cents per kilo in Alicante. As for the Navelina, in Valencia it has become 5 cents per kilo more expensive compared to twelve months ago and has fallen by 2 cents compared to the previous year.
Royalty-free varieties, slightly on the rise
According to the report from the Council, both the Nadorcott and Tango have been sold for prices above 0.80 Euro per kilo in the provinces of Valencia and Alicante, which is approximately 20 cents more than last season. But the differences with the prices of two years ago are less significant: +0.07 Euro / kg in the province of Valencia and -0.02 Euro / kg in Alicante.
The largest increase was registered by the Orri hybrid mandarin, with prices even exceeding one Euro per kilo in Castellón. It is an increase of about 35 cents compared to the previous campaign.
Lemon prices have also grown. In January they were sold for 0.40 Euro per kilo at origin, "far from the 0.20 reached last season", says the regional report.
