Spain has experienced storms and cold weather. These factors have ensured that autumn started with inevitable shortages on the market. However, according to Mario Iuzzolino of VerDi Import, in the Netherlands, this is no longer the case at the moment.
"There were certainly shortages in the full soil segment. Since then, however, decent volumes of products are coming this way from Spain. These include iceberg lettuce, broccoli, and cabbage," he says.
The supply of Spanish citrus is also good, according to the importer. "At the beginning of the season, mandarin supplies were slow to get started. Stem-and-leaf mandarins were selling for €13 to €14."
"Since then, mandarins, as well as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit have become more readily available. Market prices for leaf clementines are around €10 for 10kg. Fifteen kg bags of oranges are going for about €10,50," Mario continues.
Mario doubts there will be more shortages in the coming weeks toward the end of the year. "I have yet to see it. The trade sector is quite nervous. Christmas and New Year are both in the middle of the week. No-one wants to be left with product."
"Chinese ginger is the exception. This product is nearing the end of its season. There is limited availability. Prices are moving toward the €24 mark."
Moro blood oranges are becoming another interesting item, according to the importer. "We got the first shipment last week. These are selling very well. This deep red product has excellent quality too. There is good demand from especially Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, and Germany. These oranges are, however, going everywhere," concludes Mario.
