Russian growers forced to cut onion prices

According to the daily monitoring of the EastFruit project, onion prices have been gradually declining this past week.

Producers report a marked weakening in the demand for onions, while the market supply continues to increase. The increase in the supply is due to the desire of producers to quickly get rid of all substandard onions, the quality of which was badly damaged by rains in the first half of autumn. At the same time, the demand for such products remains relatively low, with mainly chains and resellers purchasing such onions for current sales, since they are practically unsuitable for long-term storage.

In addition, there is a greater pressure from importers, as many companies have increased their supply of relatively inexpensive onions from Kazakhstan.

Today, Russian growers are ready to ship onions at a price of 9-15 rubles / kg ($ 0.14-0.23 / kg), which is on average 10% cheaper than at the end of the previous working week.

It is worth noting that, at the moment, the price of onions in Russia is on average 23% lower than in the same period last year. In these circumstances, owners of high-quality onions prefer to stop selling and plan to resume sales in mid-November.
