Consell and the European Union met to discuss the threat posed by the unfair competition from South African citrus fruits and to start a work agenda in order to defend Castellon citrus.
The Director-General of Internationalization, Maria Dolores Parra, said she had a very positive meeting with the Deputy Head of the EU Trade Defense Unit, Fréderic Michiels, and that they had collected the necessary information to start the request to activate the safeguard clause demanded by the field.
Parra said they had analyzed the possible defense instruments that could be used to face the problems arising from the EU's free trade agreement with South Africa. She also said she had detailed the technicians about the difficulties posed by the new regulations for the citrus industry of Castellon and the Valencian Community as a whole.
The head of Internationalization addressed the latest developments in trade agreements -making a special emphasis on the agreement between the EU and the countries that make up Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay)- with the Minister of Commerce of the Permanent Representation of Spain, Juan Francisco Martinez Garcia.
Moreover, the European Commission will launch in 2020 an electronic management and authenticity system for agricultural export certificates from third countries, reported La Unió de Llauradors.
