The first prickly pears of the season from the Italian island of Sicily are already in circulation in Germany. "We got the first ones in yesterday and have already marketed some of them," says Giovanni Totaro, co-owner of specialist retailer and restaurant service Sicily Taste, headquartered in Neuss. "The first products are at a kilo price of around 4.90; although quite high priced, they are of excellent quality."

The store specializes entirely in Sicilian food, sourcing the prickly pears directly from local growers throughout the season. "This year's season starts at around the same time as last year and the prices are also within the usual limits. I assume that the price will drop by one euro in about a month," said Totaro.
The prickly pears are sold primarily in 1kg punnets. By the end of the year, the fruits will most certainly be available in specialist shops, says Totaro.
Good demand and availability
Although there are currently plenty of drupes - such as nectarines and flat peaches - available in the Neuss fresh market, the demand for prickly pears is already there. "It starts immediately, there is simply a gratifying demand, even in the summer."
