This week, the first Italian B carrots arrived at wholesaler’s Wijnand de Mooij in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. “They’re two weeks earlier than normally, so we can get an early start. That’s ideal, because the Dutch B carrot season from Limburg is switching to carrots from storage, and we have beautiful, fresh and wet carrots. We’re also arriving on the market just before the French carrot.”
Meanwhile, the Italian lettuce season is going well, according to the wholesaler. “The lettuce varieties are widely available, so we’re ready for good weather, as far as we’re concerned.We were naturally very fortunate around Easter, and the lettuce just flew from our shelves, but it became colder after that, and we noticed that around 27 April, for example, the Dutch King’s birthday. As a result, sales towards beach clubs and restaurants fell a bit behind, but we’ll be able to catch up again once the weather gets a bit better,” Wijnand expects.
He recently visited his French potato supplier, and he also saw the consequences of last summer’s dry weather there. “It had a major impact on a lot of products. Just look at the prices of cabbage and onions, that’s never been seen before. The new Spanish onion harvest hasn’t arrived yet, and the Dutch stocks are nearly empty.”
