Harvesting of new potatoes to start soon in Puglia.

"Year after year, we have tried to improve our cultivation techniques to obtain a unique product that can meet the market demand for greater quality standards," reports Francesco Attolico, owner of a business between Bari and Bitonto in Puglia.

"The company covers over 40 hectares and its core business is the cultivation of new potatoes of the Spunta, Safrane, Bellini, Loane, Soprano and Cherie varieties."

Thanks to the soil and weather conditions typical of the Lecce and Bari provinces, new potatoes are one of the area's leading production. The soil needs to be sandy, yet deep and with a good drainage.

"The next campaign has almost started and we are expecting to start harvesting in early May. As only few crops were destined to new potatoes all over Puglia, we are hoping to obtain good sales prices. Due to the bad weather in early winter and to the difficulty in procuring tuber-seeds, many businesses did not manage to plan sowing as they did in previous years."

"Our clients are made up not only by important local traders, but also by international companies who package the produce and supply it to Italian and foreign retailers. This means we are able to export our potatoes in various European countries (France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands)."

"We work with professionalism and passion every day to grow a product that is appealing and has a high quality using the most innovative techniques on the market and in compliance with the GlobalGAP and GRASP certifications."
