Last week’s Lychee Newsletter of the Toamasina Horticultural Technical Center (CTHT) indicated that: “The traditional decline in prices after the holidays is sharply accentuated. The slight revival expected in the second week of January did not happen, and the market is struggling to sell the remaining stocks of lychees from Madagascar. The product is no longer consumed, either in foreign markets or at the national level.”
In France, the sales of lychees from Madagascar are still minimal. The stocks are abundant and the receivers must make tariff concession in order to get rid of the merchandise. Lots of lychees from Madagascar on wholesale markets are sold between 1 and 1.20 euros/kg [0.52 and 0.62 USD/lb]. The marketing campaign for the Brazilian lychees continues with fairly regular prices. In Germany and Belgium, the fruit is clearly less present on the supermarket shelves. We also observe a decline in the price of South-African lychees, with 2.50 euros/kg [1.30 USD/lb] for the XL caliber and up to 3 euros/kg [1.55 USD/lb] for the XXL caliber. This general price decrease reflects the consumers’ disaffection with the product.
