The best time to start a new company is undoubtedly now. Against all odds, Alexander Bendezú Valdez, General Manager of Terra Moon SAC in Peru, has started a pomegranate export business and is looking to expand the agricultural frontier of the Rio Grande Valley with the cultivation of blueberries. "The Rio Grande valley located in southern Peru is the place where our blueberry project will be carried out and where the pomegranate fields are currently located. The area has an excellent climate, good water quality and good terrain for its development."
Peruvian producers are able to transform the sandy places into fertile export orchards.
Valdez says that the main strategy is to work in partnership with other producers in the area. "Currently the field has 20 hectares of pomegranates that are three years old with an average yield of 15 tons per hectare. We work with markets such as the United States, Russia and Europe. We will form alliances in partnership with other producers in the area to continue the growth of other agricultural export crops such as blueberries in pots with licensed varieties, with this focus on expanding around 50 hectares in the next three years."
He also tells us that the demand for Peru's pomegranate crop has been growing exponentially in international markets. The FOB price for pomegranates was between $1.6 and $2 at the end of the first quarter of 2024, the demand that Peru had to meet was 260 containers per week on average from March to the end of April.
He started Terra Moon in 2018 by providing advice to producers. "At first it was dedicated to providing advice and consulting to small and medium-sized producers in traditional and agro-export crops. By 2023 we formed an alliance to continue expanding in the market with a strategic partner and by becoming agro-exporters."
Valdez holds a master's degree in agribusiness administration from Esan University, in Lima, Peru. "I am an Agricultural Engineer specializing in the area of management, agricultural production and fertigation of fruit crops for agricultural export, with knowledge in the use of new AgTech 5.0 technologies and tools that allow increasing economic profitability and productive crops. I was trained in Israel, Guatemala, Ecuador, Brazil and Peru."
