Swedish underground mushroom nursery forced to close

The final shiitakes of the mushroom nursery in Kiruna, Sweden, have been harvested. The nursery was forced to close because mining company LKAB can no longer guarantee the safety of the mine galleries in which the shiitakes are grown. Former miner Sven-Ivan Mella started the nursery in the 1980s in a mine gallery at a depth of 540 metres. In 2016, the nursery was taken over by catering company Spis from Kiruna, which supplies the shiitakes to local companies. During the high season, about 100 kilos of shiitakes were harvested every week. The environment in the mine is ideal for the production of mushrooms. Temperatures are low and even and not influenced by weather circumstances.
