2M is specialised in exotic fruits

Italy: Fresh pineapples from the DR thanks to air transportation

Air transportation is the best solution for shipping high-quality pineapples. Basically, the pineapples ripen on the plant. Within 2-3 days, they are already on the market shelves. This is the policy of the 2M Exotic Fruits company that markets the Anana brand.

The referent Luca Bernardini, “We have a great experience in this sector. As every operator knows, the organoleptic quality is higher if the fruit can ripen longer on the plant itself. Starting from this idea, our policy is to harvest pineapples from our Dominican producers and bring them to the customer within 2-3 days from the harvesting. To do this, air transportation is the only way”.

Pineapples are checked through every phase by an Italian referent in the Dominican Republic, starting from the farming until the shipping. The principal destinations are Spain and Italy.

Bernardini, “Leaving the fruits to ripen on the plant allows reaching very high Brix degree levels. Since the pineapples arrive in the stores within 2-3 days from the harvesting, the fruits are extremely fresh. Air transportation is more expensive, of course. However, the result is definitely better than leaving the fruit to ripen in the containers. Additionally, the trip by ship lasts 15-20 days, at least.

The pineapple shipped through air transportation costs 3.95 euros, whereas the for pineapples shipped by ship cost 1.50-1.90 euros/kg.

“Usually, our pineapples are harvested on Fridays. Saturday, they are already available in Italy. On Monday, they are on the market shelves. The shipping time is incredibly short, it feels like eating pineapple directly from the field”

The company is GlobalGAP certified. The business is specialised in pineapples, but it also markets avocados, mangoes, pitayas, papayas – all of them imported via air transportation.
