Turkey: Increase for orange production in Adana

The early orange harvest has started in Adana, a city located in southern Turkey where 35 % of Turkey’s citrus fruits are grown. Yuregir Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mehmet Akin Dogan: “There is a 5 % increase in the production volume of early harvest oranges and the price at the grower is currently around 0.25 USD per kg.

Oranges from this area are sold to Iraq, Ukraine, Russia and East Europe in addition to many important domestic markets. These early harvest oranges are of the fukumoto variety and exports started on October 15th for this season.

Growers receive between 3 to 6 tons per 1,000 square meters depending on their production competencies. Currently total production area for oranges in Turkey is around 52,000 hectares whereas orange production area in Adana is 13,500 hectares. Adana by itself is responsible for 25 % of all orange production in Turkey and 35 % of all citrus fruit production. Citrus fruits are very important export items for Turkey which brings a lot of income for our country and creates a lot jobs in the Adana area.”
