A pretty standard season for the Caserta pepper, “Since the beginning of the campaign, the market has been quite calm and there were no price spikes. The product has been rarely missing, notwithstanding the initial one-week delay”.
Salvatore Iodice was speaking to FreshPlaza. In 1982, he founded the Iodice company together with his brothers Pasquale and Antonio. The company has 80-100 hectares of greenhouses in the south of Italy. The pepper is the company’s flagship product. They market 9.000-9.500 tons yearly.
“Our local variety or the Lamuyo variety is the most appreciated by our clients. Mostly, we focus on the sales at a national level. Foreign markets ask for the green pepper, at the beginning of the campaign. They ask for the red pepper, only if the general quantity is lacking”.
Almost 80% of the Iodice’s production is for the great organised distribution. The remainder is marketed in some national markets, “Limited volumes of peppers are sold in France”.
Iodice concludes, “We need more traceability on the Italian pepper and a stronger promotion of the product. There is a very strong competition from Spain, Poland and the Netherlands. In Italy, we have numerous regulations and standards to align with and that necessitates certifications. Can we say the same regarding other countries?”.
