Banana republic Germany: how foodstuff becomes remandered stock

German citizens annually eat more than a million tons of bananas. With that they are at the top of the European list - with the result an enormous control on prices. Because one third of the total import of bananas ends up in German supermarkets and discounters, as mentioned on the German website konsumer.info.

The price of bananas has not increased for 20 years. The German TV station ARD recently produced a report showing the surprisingly large influence of the German supermarket chains and what the dramatic results of the low prices have on the workers and the environment in the growing regions of Latin America.

The report, made over a period of a year shows with probing pictures, that the real bananas republic is no longer in Latin America at the moment, but in Germany. The report, which was made over a period of a year, may be viewed here:
